About the Artist

I paint for the joy!
Carol Moffatt
I live in the South Island of New Zealand, surrounded by thrilling landscapes, glorious mountains, dramatic skies, braided rivers and trees. In my work I try to capture the moments which take my breath away and paint to remember those special moments. These are moments in time that I want to share with others through my work.
My early life was totally consumed with music. It was my escape into another world as my painting has now become. I didn’t follow the conventional path with formal art training. However, during my working life I tried to paint and draw in any spare time I had. Using watercolours, by attending night classes, and weekend workshops etc frequently filled any spare moment I had. Finally, when retirement beckoned I make the decision to paint full time. Music has now become my background to support the painting.
Four years ago I started using oils and that has been my turning point, creating greater depth in my work. I am glad that I used watercolours first, because while they are a challenging medium they also provide a great seque to oils.
I love plein air painting. Listening to the sounds around me and feeling the atmosphere helps me capture the essence of the scene. I work on small panels so that I can developing larger works in the studio.
I am so exceedingly grateful for the experiences I have and will continue to have. It brings such happiness and joy. I love the other artists, the shows, the exhibitions, and the new people I meet. I never tire of talking about how I create my work and the wonderful experiences I have had.
